3 He is moving to Lincoln to be nearer his family and new grandson. Mike has been an active member of Waterbeach Community Association for over 10 years and held the position of Treasurer since 2004. He has been involved in many aspects of village life. Generously giving of his time folding and delivering Beach News and he has been a major contributor to the organisation of Waterbeach Feast, Carols on the Green on Christmas Eve and the 60 Plus parties. On behalf of Waterbeach , Landbeach and Chittering we would like to say a huge thank you to Mike for his dedication and commitment over the years. We wish him all the very best in his retirement and many happy years in his new home. Christmas - Carols on the Green on Christmas Eve was very well attended and the charity collection raised 666 for local clubs and groups. Thank you for your support. To include Waterbeach in this event we are inviting everyone to bring a picnic to Waterbeach Recreation Ground at approximately This event is aimed at all members of the Community both young and old alike. Some games and entertainment will be provided during the afternoon.

6 Further details will be on the Waterbeach Community Association website and displayed in the notice boards. As it is due to be a family event it is requested that people do not bring their dogs. Feast - 16th June - We are continuing through the alphabet and the theme this year is Something beginning with In this edition of Beach News you will find the various forms needed to join in the activities. Pitch Booking form, page 29 and Parade Entry form, page 8, for all entries into the parade floats, family & friends groups, walking groups etc. This year s Feast Competition for children and adults will be Fabulous Flowers . What do you have to do? We want you to make a flower large or small, beautiful to wacky, from any kind of material possible paper, fabric, wood, plastic, metal, wool, clay, recycled materials the list is as long as your imagination. Bring your flower, labelled with your name along to the Green on the morning of Saturday 16th June, between and Flowers will be judged and the Best Flower will win a prize.

7 Entry is free and further details and an entry form can be found on page 14. Sarge Stevens - We regret to inform you that Sarge Stevens sadly passed away on 26th January 2012. Whilst living in Waterbeach Sarge was actively involved in many groups and organisations within the village and was Community Association Treasurer for a number of years until she moved to Malvern, Worcestershire in 2003. Our thoughts are with Steve and the family. Waterbeach Barracks Colonel Andy Phillips has written the update below to go out to the local Community so that they are aware of the latest news on the Barracks closure: In November last year, I informed you that there had been an announcement on the rebasing of 39 Engineer Regiment (Air Support) and Headquarters 12 (Air Support) Engineer Group from Waterbeach Barracks to Kinloss and Wittering respectively, followed by the closure of Waterbeach Barracks.

8 At that stage I was unable to give you any firm timelines. 3 After a number of planning meetings and visits to the new locations, I can now let you know that the endorsed Army plan is: The main body of 39 Engineer Regiment will rebase from Waterbeach Barracks to RAF Kinloss in July 2012. The main body of Headquarters 12 (Air Support) Engineer Group, including Headquarters Works Group (Airfields) and 529 Specialist Team Royal Engineers (Air Support), will rebase from Waterbeach Barracks to RAF Wittering in October 2012. The Army will then vacate Waterbeach Barracks and hand an empty barracks to the Defence Infrastructure Organisation by the end of March 2013. The Defence Infrastructure Organisation will then dispose of the Barracks and Married Quarters, although we are not yet aware of detailed plans or timelines for this. The run-down and handover of the Barracks will be carried out by a small team from the Group who will remain working at Waterbeach between October 2012 and March 2013.

9 There are also likely to be a few families who do not move to Kinloss or Wittering and who will remain in the Married Quarters at Waterbeach for a period of time after the move. We will do everything within our gift to minimise the impact of our departure on the local Community . We also plan to mark our departure in an appropriate way and my team will liaise with local officials to arrange this; at the moment we re looking at a Beat the Retreat event in the Barracks on the evening of Fri 15 June to tie in with the Waterbeach Feast weekend. I reiterate what I said previously; we have been at Waterbeach Barracks for many years and have enjoyed terrific support and friendship from the Community . We all have fond feelings for Waterbeach and will be extremely sad to leave. We will stay in touch with you through our usual contacts in the Parish Council, Community Association as well as local councillors, so if anybody has issues arising from the closure please raise it through them and we will look to see where we can help.

10 As Colonel Andy says, please let us know any particular concerns or queries. Dave Hornby, Station Staff Officer, should be the usual POC for routine enquiries and will attend and brief on our plans at the usual regular local meetings. Now that we have the above direction, we will be setting up a Closure Working Group to start work on a detailed plan for the vacation and closure of Waterbeach Barracks and will let you know our plans as soon as we can. 4 Beaches Community Car Service Help! Our Drivers Are Getting Tired! The Beaches Community Car Service, which started on April 1 2009, has now been in operation for nearly 3 years, during which time they have undertaken over 2800 journeys, covering over 27500 miles. So you can see that our drivers could do with a little help! The service fulfils a variety of needs, from urgent hospital trips (we cover Addenbrookes, Ely, Newmarket, and Papworth Hospitals to name but a few) to shopping trips and visits to care homes.
