1 Welcome to the quality -CaringModel HistoryDr. Duffy is a cardiovascular clinical specialist, academician, consultant, and formeradministrator and Director of NursingServices. She was influenced in her career byher Catholic faith and by various teachers andprofessors who role-modeled respect andhuman dignity. She believes that persons areunique, autonomous beings with inherentrights and responsibilities. While completingher doctoral dissertation, was alsoworking as a nursing supervisor at a largetertiary institution where she was pursuingoutcomes studies.

2 Patient satisfaction was anoutcome of interest and through carefulinterviews she noticed that when patientsexpressed dissatisfaction with nursing care, they regularly reported "Nurses just don'tseem to care." Focusing on this clinicalproblem, Dr. Duffy developed an interest inthe Theory of Human caring (Watson, 1979),Mayerhoff's (1971) philosophy, King's Theoryof Goal Attainment (1981), and Donabedian'sQuality Health Model (1964). She continuedher studies, developing a tool to measurenurse caring ; her investigations later linkednurse caring to patient time, Dr.

3 Duffy continued to studyhuman interaction and the role of cohesiveteams in the achievement of healthcareoutcomes. During a study of a caring -basednursing intervention in heart failure patients,Drs. Duffy & Hoskins, both of The CatholicUniversity of America in Washington, DCdeveloped the Quality-Caring Model . Thismid-range theory reflects nursing's uniquerole within a multidisciplinary health caresystem and places caring relationships at thecenter of nurses' work. The major purposes ofthe quality - caring Model are to: 1) guideprofessional practice; 2) reaffirm and exposethe hidden work of nursing; 3) describe theconceptual-theoretical-empirical linkagesbetween quality of care and human caring ;and 4) propose a research agenda that willprovide evidence of the value of nursing(Duffy & Hoskins, 2003).
