It provides acommon attachment interface for systems manufacturers, system integrators, software suppliers, and suppliersof intelligent storage devices.

7 It includes the Packet Command feature set implemented by devices commonlyknown as ATAPI standard maintains a high degree of compatibility with the AT Attachment Interface with Packet Interface 5 (ATA/ATAPI-5), NCITS 340-2000, and while providing additional functions, is not intended to require changesto presently installed devices or existing revision 3bAmericanNationalStandardApproval of an American National Standard requires verification by ANSI that therequirements for due process, consensus, and other criteria for approval have beenmet by the standards developer.

8 Consensus is established when, in the judgment ofthe ANSI Board of Standards Review, substantial agreement has been reached bydirectly and materially affected interests. Substantial agreement means much morethan a simple majority, but not necessarily unanimity. Consensus requires that allviews and objections be considered, and that effort be made towards their use of American National Standards is completely voluntary; their existencedoes not in any respect preclude anyone, whether he has approved the standards ornot, from manufacturing, marketing, purchasing, or using products, processes, orprocedures not conforming to the American National Standards Institute does not develop standards and will in nocircumstances give interpretation on any American National Standard.
