Wick (1920-2004). The balanceof the collection was acquired from Ars Libri by the Library of Congressin September 2010. In addition to WRITING manuals and CALLIGRAPHY BOOKS per se, the collec-tion includes varia of related interest, such as pictorial alphabet BOOKS ,and early studies and histories of the development of Wick's collection of fable literature (171 items published between1570 and 1953) is currently available, en bloconly, from Ars Libri ;please contact us for further details. Other sections of the Wick library,including English and Continental literature, will be offered in 2011.

Mr. Wick s collection of FrenchRomantic literature and illustrated BOOKS has just been acquired fromArs Libri by an American 20101 ADAM, VICTOR[Les charades alphab tiques.] 25 lithographic plates, eachwith multiple vignette illustrations within dec. figurative bor-ders; (1)f. Allais book is a valuable treatise on the art of cal-ligraphy. There are few purely ornamental decorations,major importance having been given by the calligrapher tothe instructions, illustrations, tables of exercises and dia-grams which explain the technique of a perfect Frenchhand (Marzoli). Andrade de Figueiredo was born in Espirito Santo, wherehis father was Governor of the Capitania. The fine portraitis dated 1721 and is showing Figueiredo at the age of was an eminent calligrapher and a creator of the Por-tuguese handwriting until the reign of Don Jos I ( ). His work follows the style of the great Italian mas-ters in its use of clubbed ascenders and descenders, andof Diaz Morante, the famous Spanish WRITING master, in itsvery elaborate show of command of hand. By his contem-poraries, he was known as the Morante portugues (Ekstr m).

Araujo was a Portuguese calligrapher and, as we learnfrom the title-page of his Arte de escrever, Professor ofWriting and Arithmetic. He adds that he was Correspondentof the Imperial Academy of Science in St. Petersburg (Mar-zoli). The majority of the plates were engraved by Jos L cio da Costa; four were engraved by Manuel da The plates are dated from 1783 to 1790.
