1 ZIMBABWE SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS COUNCIL . ( zimsec ). ZIMBABWE GENERAL CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION. (ZGCE). For examination in 2013 - 2016. O level Syllabuses NDEBELE (3155). SHONA (3159). SUBJECT 3155 NDEBELE. There will be two question papers of two hours each. The new orthography will be used in the question paper and candidates will be required to use the new orthography. All answers are to be written in Ndebele. PAPER 1 (2 HOURS) (100 MARKS). Section A Free Composition in Ndebele (50 marks). Candidates should be advised to spend an hour on this question. A choice of subjects will be given: these may include an essay, a letter or letters, narrative, a dialogue or a description. Special account will be taken of arrangement, subject matter, idiom, command of language and orthography. The composition should be about three pages or approximately one hundred lines in length. Section B Language Usage (20 marks). Questions will be set to test the candidate's knowledge of proverbs, idioms, idiophones and figures of speech.

2 Section C Comprehension (30 marks). A passage or passages, either prose or verse, in Ndebele, with questions to test comprehension of the passage(s) as a whole, and in detail. Candidates may be asked to make a summary or pr cis of the whole or part of a passage and to explain individual words, phrases or sentences in relation to their context. PAPER 2 (2 HOURS) (100 MARKS). Section A Grammatical Structure of Zulu/Ndebele (25 marks). Questions on the grammatical structure which is common to Ndebele and Zulu will be set. The recommended book for students is: UHLELO LWESIZULU by Nyembezi or any other suitable book recommended by the Ministry of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture. Questions may be set on the following: the noun, the pronoun, the qualificatives, the simple tenses of the verb (both affirmative and negative), the copulatives, the verb, the adverb, the conjunctive, the idiophone and the exclamation. 2. Candidates should know how these forms fare constructed, what types of prefix, stem, suffix etc.

3 Are found in any form, and also how they may be modified and inflected to form locatives, copulatives, diminutives and other parts of speech. Section B Prescribed Works (75 marks). Questions on the content or the prescribed works will be set as follows: Sub-section (i) Two questions on poetry of which one must be answered. Sub-section (ii) One question on each of two books written in traditional Zulu prose. Candidates will be required to answer one of the two questions in this sub-section. Sub-section (iii) One question on each of two books written in modern Ndebele prose. Candidates will be required to answer one of the two questions in this sub-section. All questions on prescribed works carry 25 marks each. The recommended reference books for students are: IMVELO LOLIMI LWESINDEBELE by Ndhlukula and ILIFA LABOBABA. PRESCRIBED TEXTS FOR SECTION B. Unless given the option of answering in English, candidates will be required to write their answers in Standard Shona orthography and will be expected to conform to the rules for word-division and spelling recommended by the Shona Language Committee and circulated by the Ministry of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture, ZIMBABWE . 6 Questions may be set on the noun, the absolute pronoun, the adjective, the demonstrative, the enumerative, the possessive, the relative, the simple tenses (both affirmative and negative) of the verb, the moods of the verb and the extended forms of the verb stem, the copulative, adverb and conjunctive. 4.
