Leah Langlois University of Chichester, UK 94 Abstract This paper intended to study the impact that aspects of a reading environment, namely, reading aloud and creating a reading corner and library display, can have on children s engagement in reading for pleasure. The research took place in a lower key stage 2 class with 29 pupils, in a predominantly white, middle-class, single form entry primary school, located in Southern England. The initial concept of this study emerged from the National Literacy Trust survey on children s reading habits and preferences, which found that only 55% of children and young people stated that they loved reading .
