Deep Architectures are composed of multiple levels of non-linear operations, such as in neural netswith many hidden layers or in complicated propositional formulae re-using many sub-formulae. Searchingthe parameter space of deep Architectures is a difficult optimization task, but Learning algorithms such asthose for Deep Belief Networks have recently been proposed to tackle this problem with notable success,beating the state-of-the-art in certain areas.

One of the important points we argue in the first part of this pa per is that the functions learned should have a structure composed of multiple levels, analogous to the multiple levels of abstraction that humans naturally envision when they describe an aspect of their world.
