2 n HOW DOES SICKLE CELL DISEASE AFFECT THE BLOOD? Red blood cells normally contain hemoglobin A, or adult hemoglobin. In sickle cell disease, the child inherits an abnormal gene for the production of hemoglobin, which is called a gene mutation.
