Essential Oils from Steam Distillation

www.engineering.iastate.edu

Steam Distillation . Background This all-glass, vertical steam distillation unit, consisting of a hot plate, boiling flask, biomass flask, still head, condenser and receiver, is used for “dry steam” distillation of plant material (see equipment diagram below). Steam is produced in the boiling by heating distilled water with the hot plate.

“EXTRACTION OF ESSENTIAL OIL USING STEAM DISTILLATION

ethesis.nitrkl.ac.in

Steam distillation is used in the extraction of Essential Oil from the plant material. It is a special type of distillation or a separation process for temperature sensitive materials like oils, resins, hydrocarbons, etc. which are insoluble in water and may decompose at their boiling point.

Chapter 18 Ethanol distillation: the fundamentals

chemeng.queensu.ca

Represented in Figure 1 is a typical distillation tower that could be employed to separate an ideal mixture. Such a system would contain the following elements: a. a feed composed of the two components to be separated, b. a source of energy to drive the process (in most cases, this energy source is steam, either directly entering the base of ...

Distillation Design - University of Utah

Steam 10-60 Hot Oil 20-60 Applicability • Distillation is the least expensive means of separating mixtures of liquids. • If relative volatilities of components is less than 1.1, distillation becomes very expensive (Douglas, 1988) and extraction or reactive distillation should be considered.

Clean Steam Systems in the Pharmaceutical Industry

pdhonline.com

Clean steam must be free of contaminants at the point of use. Chemical and microbial contaminants can enter steam systems in a variety of ways, and in the design of clean steam systems this must be avoided. Pathways for contamination include leakage, air being piulled into the system and “grow through” from a contaminated external environment.
