The cytology of BALF is an analysis of the cellular components of the specimen. The mo st abundant cells retrieved by BAL are the inflammatory cells which line the alveolar space. These include the macrophage, lymphocyte, and neutrophil. The alveolar macrophage is the most common cell in the BALF.
