Now, most Americans are healthier in every phase of life and live in good health into old age. In 2000, the average life expectancy for Americans was about 75 years (77 for women and 73 for men) (1). Improved public health and medical treatments have translated into far fewer deaths from acute causes such as childbirth or infections.
