The discovery of gold in Montana in the 1860s brought thousands of people of many cultures and backgrounds to the Rocky Mountains. These newcom-ers held different beliefs than the people who lived here.

Georgians decided to try their luck on a little gulch in the Prickly Pear Valley. That little creek, they decided, would be their last chance. On July 14, 1864, they began working the gulch. Bonanza! They found gold plentiful and easy to remove. By fall, more than 100 cabins teetered on the hillsides on either side of Last Chance Gulch.
