Grade six is an especially important year for bridging the concrete concepts of arithmetic and the abstract thinking of algebra (Arizona Department of Education [ADE] 2010). In previous grades, students built a foundation in number and operations, geometry, and measurement and data. When students enter Grade six, they are fluent in addition, subtraction, and multi- plication with multi-digit whole numbers and have a solid conceptual understanding of all four operations with positive rational numbers, including fractions.
