October 2021 4-1 Chapter 4 Cross Section Elements General The main Elements that make up the Cross Section of a highway or street are the roadway and the border area. The roadway is for vehicular use and consists of the traveled way, shoulders (paved and unpaved), on-street parking, and bike lanes. The border area is the area between the roadway and the right of way line and consists of fill slopes, ditches, sidewalks, multi-use paths, and berms. Border areas can also accommodate utilities landscaping features, and stormwater control measures. Refer to GB Chapter 4 Section for additional guidance. Traveled Way Traveled way is defined as the portion of the road that allows movement for through traffic. It does not include shoulders, curb, turn lanes, bike and pedestrian facilities, or parking lanes.
