Chapter 7 Facility Layout Pittsburgh International: An Efficient Layout Pittsburgh International Airport was the first airport constructed from scratch after airline deregulation. It is designed to mesh with the "hub-and-spokes" system, in which passengers from a variety of cities come to a central hub and then transfer to other flights en route to their destinations. Hub airports must be able to handle large volumes of passengers and flights with increased speed and efficiency. At Pittsburgh, moving walkways and shuttle trains transport passengers to distant gates in eleven minutes or less. Gates are more spacious, too, to handle the larger crowds. Baggage is bar-coded and channeled by computerized laser scanners along six miles of conveyor belts from flight to flight. The terminal itself is X-shaped to allow planes to approach from any direction. Dual taxiways run in opposite directions around the terminal to reduce queuing time on takeoffs.
