206 Chapter Seven Understanding self I begin this Chapter with an analysis of self -concept. I have reviewed how self -concept is organized and the role the parents, teachers and peers play in the shaping the self -concept of children. Additionally, I have identified the key factors that facilitate self -concept and self -esteem. Facilitating self - Understanding and enhancing self -esteem is the focus of this Chapter . The rationale for enhancing self -image and self esteem is discussed in the section Aims and rationale . Section 1 Why we need a clear concept of self and how it can help. self -concept refers to the composite ideas, feelings, and attitudes people have about themselves (Hilgard, Atkinson, and Atkinson, 1979: ). self -concept is also defined by Purkey (1988) as the sum of a complex, organized, and dynamic system of learned beliefs, attitudes and opinions that each person holds to be true about his or her personal existence.
