A 70-year-old male has excruci-ating pain in the lower left part ofhis face. This began 1 month ago. Hedescribes it as being like a jolt of lightningthat radiates from his left ear, down to hisjaw, and to the side of his mouth. Thesejolts of pain occur numerous times eachday. Between attacks his face seems normal. He denies any numbness or tingling sensations. There is no hearingabnormality. The pain is triggered bytalking, chewing, or touch of the lowerleft part of his face. He is unable to eat orbrush his teeth, particularly on the leftside, since he fears triggering anotherpainful attack.
