UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD BRIDGE, LONG BEACH, CA. The Union Pacific Railroad Bridge replaced an existing seven-span steel girder structure erected over the Los Angeles River on 40-foot high cast-in-place concrete piers. The greater span between new piers helped protect Long Beach, CA from flooding and lowered the flood insurance premiums for thousands of residents along the River. This project included the construction of retaining walls, a new steel girder bridge built upon concrete piers, footings and driven pile foundations, demolition of the old railroad bridge, miscellaneous asphalt paving, utility work and concrete slab replacement. Additionally this work was done while maintaining an active flow of water in the River.
