Grounding Requirements for Portable Generators

Frame of a Portable generator need not begrounded (connected to earth) and that theframe may serve as the ground (in place ofthe earth): The generator supplies only equipmentmounted on the generator and/or cord- and plug-connected equipment throughreceptacles mounted on the generator, (f)(3)(i)(A), and The noncurrent-carrying metal parts ofequipment (such as the fuel tank, the inter-nal combustion engine, and the generator shousing) are bonded to the generatorframe, and the equipment Grounding con-ductor terminals (of the power receptaclesthat are a part of [mounted on] the genera-tor) are bonded to the generator frame, (f)(3)(i)(B). Thus, rather than connect to a groundingelectrode system, such as a driven groundrod, the generator s frame replaces thegrounding these conditions do not exist, then agrounding electrode, such as a ground rod,is required.
