Health workers play a vital role in treatment, following up close contacts, and allaying of fears of families and low risk contacts. Although South Africa has not experienced large epidemics that occur periodically in the meningitis belt and occasionally in refugee camps in central Africa, occasional clusters/outbreaks do cause national alarm. It is vital that this commonly fatal disease is managed GUIDELINES emphasise the importance of a high index of suspicion, early detection and appropriate rapid management of the disease.
