While guidelines are useful aids to assist providers in determining appropriate practices for many patients with specific clinical problems or prevention issues, guidelines are not meant to replace the clinical judgment of the individual provider or establish a standard of care.

This guideline does not apply to women who are pregnant or anticipating pregnancy. These patients should be referred to Obstetrics for blood pressure management. Prevention Efforts should be made to minimize hypertension risk factors: obesity, physical inactivity, moderate to high alcohol intake, high sodium intake, and high saturated fat intake.
