1 IMPACT BENEFIT AGREEMENTS BETWEEN ABORIGINAL COMMUNITIES AND MININGCOMPANIES:THEIR USE IN CANADAI rene Sosa and Karyn KeenanOctober, 2001 FOREWORDThis report is part of an ongoing collaborative effort BETWEEN the Environmental mining Councilof British Columbia, the canadian Environmental Law Association and CooperAcci n: Acci nSolidaria para el Desarrollo. The purpose of this collaboration, which has been supported withfunding from the canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the WeedonFoundation, is to build capacity among communities affected by mining in Peru and Canada,based on the belief that, by exchanging information and experiences BETWEEN thesecommunities, they will be better equipped to defend their rights and interests vis- -vis mineraldevelopment projects. In the past, such projects have proved to have significant adverseenvironmental, social, cultural and economic effects. The report presents an overview of IMPACT and BENEFIT AGREEMENTS (IBAs).
