INSTEC , Inc. was founded in 1984 by a group of pioneering liquid crystal researchers from the Department of Physics at the University of Colorado Boulder. When the prototype of the HS1 hot stage was built, their goal was to develop an instrument to meet the rigorous needs of their own academic research. The design of the HS1 was successful and resulted in the launching of INSTEC as a small garage-based company. Actually, to be honest, it was more like a toolbox in the corner of the garage. As the years progressed INSTEC expanded, first filling that garage to capacity, and then moving into its own design and manufacturing space. INSTEC s customer base also broadened from academic researchers to include scientists and engineers from government and industrial organizations around the globe.
