The predictive record is not that great, but the explanatory power is particularly helpful. This paper offers a brief primer on the key theories of INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS in use today: realism, liberalism, critical/reflectivist theories and social constructivism. There are case studies of each THEORY in relation to the UN system. Starting to engage with theoretical approaches to INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS is vital because it helps us to do a number of things: 1. To understand the basis of some of the ideas which actually shaped INTERNATIONAL organisations, like the UN.
