UNCLASSIFIED Army Regulation 27 55 Legal Services Notarial Services Headquarters Department of the Army Washington, DC 24 January 2020 SUMMARY of CHANGE AR 27 55 Notarial Services This major revision, dated 24 January 2020 o Eliminates the requirement for military paralegals in the grades of E 3 and E 4 to be appointed by a staff judge advocate prior to serving as notaries (para 1 8). o Eliminates the organizational training requirement for military paralegals who have received notary training in Advanced Individual Training (para 1 9). o Authorizes all noncommissioned officer military paralegals to serve as notaries (para 2 2a(2)). o Authorizes all military paralegals to serve as notaries under the immediate supervision of an attorney (para 2 2a(3)(a)).
All notaries must be trained on the content of this regulation and applicable local law. Military paralegals typically receive notary training at Advanced Individual Training (AIT). Supervisors must provide training equivalent to the AIT instruction for Judge Advocate Legal Services personnel who have not received comparable training.
