1 of 86 Updated 09/01/2021 List of Rural Counties And Designated eligible census Tracts in metropolitan Counties Updated census 2010/0MB Bulletin No. 20-01 Beginning with FY 2022 grants, the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy (FORHP) has modified its list of areas eligible for Rural Health funding. In addition to all of the previous listings, 295 outlying Metro Counties are now considered fully Rural . As in prior years, all Counties that are not designated as parts of metropolitan Areas (MAs) by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) are considered Rural . Any county that is not a part of a MA is considered Rural . Counties classified as Micropolitan are non- metropolitan and Rural . The original list of MAs based on the 2010 census was issued in 2013 and updates are available at the census webpage on metropolitan and Micropolitan areas. Due to the fact that entire Counties are designated as metropolitan when, in fact, large parts of many Counties may be Rural in nature, FORHP has used an alternative method of looking at sub-county units of these metropolitan Counties that would allow sections to be designated Rural .

S. ection II . is a list of Metropolitan counties in which either have Census Tracts that are considered rural or are classed as completely rural.
