Overview functions describe situations in which one quantity is determined by another. The area of a circle, for example, is a function of its ra- dius. When describing relationships between quantities, the defin- ing characteristic of a function is that the input value determines the output value or, equivalently, that the output value depends upon the input value.
3 Undergraduate mathematics may involve functions of more than one variable. The area of a rectangle, for example, can be viewed as a function of two variables: its width and length.
