1 Description of the gaugeThe Frisbee -shaped collecting bowl should be made ofanodized, spun aluminium and have the dimensions shown inFig. 1. It should be supported with the opening m aboveground level and have an opaque drain pipe leading from thestem down to a rainwater collecting bottle1 on the ground. Forcollection periods of one month the capacity of the bottle shouldbe at least 5 litres. The collecting bowl should be lined with a10-mm thick, 240-mm diameter, disc of black, open-celled (10pores per inch) polyester foam. The gauge should incorporatea bird-strike preventor in the form of a ring of fine (1-mm thick)plastic fishing line (left slightly slack) supported 5 cm abovethe collecting bowl on six stainless steel struts (Fig.)
