Johnson, The rapid development of the United States from raw wilderness and frontier to the leading nation of the world is in itself a marvel. The vast expansion of its population was made possible by the immigration of literally millions of peasants. At first glance, these traditional peasants, largely illiterate, would hardly seem to be the material from which to build a sophisticated society. The chief structural element which made possible this rapid development was the American public School system.
