Tests for Standard Deviations (Two or More samples ) Overview The Minitab Assistant includes two analyses to compare independent samples to determine whether their variability significantly differs. The 2-Sample Standard deviation test compares the Standard Deviations of 2 samples , and the Standard Deviations test compares the Standard Deviations of more than 2 samples . In this paper, we refer to k-sample designs with k = 2 as 2-sample designs and k-sample designs with k > 2 as multiple-sample designs. Generally, these two types of designs are studied separately (see Appendix A). Because the Standard deviation is the square root of the variance, a hypothesis test that compares Standard Deviations is equivalent to a hypothesis test that compares variances.
