3.5 Parabolas, Ellipses, and Hyperbolas
The exercises give practice with all the steps we have taken-center the parabola to Y = ax2, rescale it to y = x2, locate the vertex and focus and directrix. Summary for other parabolas y = ax2 + bx + c has its vertex where dy/dx is zero.

www.ncert.nic.inIn this case, each integral represents a parabola with its axis along y-axis. Clearly , for C = 0, we obtain y = x2, a parabola with its vertex on the origin. The curve y = x2 + 1 for C = 1 is obtained by shifting the parabola y = x2 one unit along y-axis in positive direction. For C = – 1, y = x2 – 1 is obtained by shifting the parabola

www.ncert.nic.inare sections of a parabola given by the Newton’s equation of motion (see section 3.6), 1 2 2 h =ut + gt for downward motion, and 1 2 2 h =ut – gt for upward motion, with different values of u in each case. These are examples of periodic motion. Thus, a motion that repeats itself at regular intervals of time is called periodic motion.
