Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC)
exchange sites in New York soils are hydrogen, aluminum, iron and manganese. Cations such as zinc and copper are typically present in the soil in too low a concentration to occupy much of the CEC. Why do soils have a CEC? Soils have a CEC primarily because clay particles and organic matter in the soil tends to be negatively charged.

SOIL FERTILITY AND NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT
nmsp.cals.cornell.eduOct 26, 2016 · stage (silking and tasseling). For nitrogen, the rate of uptake increases rapidly between V8 (knee high typically) and R1 (silking). When plants are young and small, nutrient need is low. As plants enlarge and start to grow rapidly, nutrient needs increase dramatically. Competency Area 2: Basic Concepts of Soil Fertility 7.
