Chapter 14-DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS FOR WELDING
Tack welds are often used to hold parts in place while more extensive, final welds are made. For sheet metal, tack welds often provide more than adequate strength and avoid the overdesign and expense of an "all-around" fillet weld. However, if no other welding is required on an assembly, spot welding deserves initial consideration. Figure 7.
