Dispersive vs. FTIR Instruments
Raman signals are inherently weak, especially when using visible light excitation and so a low number of scattered photons are available for detection. One method to amplify weak Raman signals is to employ surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). SERS uses nanoscale roughened metal surfaces typically made of gold (Au) or silver (Ag).

In the presence of weak instruments (excluded instruments only weakly correlated with included endogenous regressors) the loss of precision will be severe, and IV estimates may be no improvement over OLS. This suggests we need a method to determine whether a particular regressor must be treated as endogenous.

Testing for Weak Instruments in Linear IV Regression
scholar.harvard.eduthe instruments are weak if the conventional α-level Wald test based on IV statistics has an actual size that could exceed a certain threshold r, for example r = 10% when α = 5%. Each of these definitions yields a set of population parameters that defines weak instruments, that is, a “weak instrument set.”
