A1 Introduction: Fluids, continuum and density Definition of a fluid A fluid is a substance that flows. A fluid deforms continuously under the influence of an applied force, whereas a solid deforms a finite amount and then resists further deformation. This is because a solid can sustain a static internal shear stress whereas a fluid cannot.
