NEWTON’S PARTICLE THEORY OF LIGHT
galileo.phys.virginia.eduin the vertical light path. If Newton was right, and the light speed in water was greater than in air, then the return light beam would arrive in less than 60 ns, and its path would be deflected closer to the source. What Foucault found was that introducing the water-filled tube caused the light path to be deflected farther from the source.

How Fast Are You Moving When You Are Sitting Still?
nightsky.jpl.nasa.govIt’s a huge circle, and the speed with which the Sun has to move is an astounding 483,000 miles per hour (792,000 km/hr)! The Earth, anchored to the Sun by gravity, follows along at the same fantastic speed. (By the way, as fast as this speed is, it is still a long way from the speed limit of the universe—the speed of light. Light

Introduction to Light and Color
www.nasa.govAll light can be traced to certain energy sources, like the Sun, an electric bulb, or a match, but most of what hits the eye is reflected light. When light strikes some materials, it is bounced off or reflected. If the material is not opaque, the light goes through it at a slower speed, and it is bent or refracted. Some light is absorbed into ...
