General Characteristics of the District Yamunanagar is an important city on Delhi Ambala Rail Line & Sher Shah Suri Marg ( ), connected with all important places in the country. It is 123 Kms from Delhi & 130 Kms from Chandigarh. Yamunanagar District lies on the western Bank of river Yamuna which once flows about 11 Kms to the east forming eastern boundary of the District .

3 The river Yamuna separates Haryana from Uttar Pardesh. Location and Geographical Area The Yamunanagar Distt. lies between 29 09' 50" and 29 50' North Latitude and 76 31' 15" and 77 12' 45" east longitude, its height from sea level is between 235 and 252 meters. The Yamunanagar Distt. is surrounded by Kurukshetra Distt. on its north-west, Jind & Kaithal Distt. on its West, Yamuna Nagar Distt. on its south and Uttar Pardesh on its East. Yamuna River Forms eastern boundary of the District & flows from North to South. The District is a part of Ganga- Sindus (Indo-Ganges tic) plains and has a well spread network of Western Yamuna Canal. Its geographical area has been divided into three agro climatic regions, Khadar, Bhangar, Nardak belt. Khadar Starts from Indri- Yamunanagar road, one Mile away from Yamuna Nagar Covering the area in between Yamuna River and National Highway Road upto Patti- Kalyana Village.

4 Bhangar Area Starts from West of Khadar area covering Gharaunda, Development block. The Nardak area lies in Nissing, Nilokheri and Assandh development block. However, Its Quarter is saline and not fit for Irrigation. Topography :- 4 Yamunanagar Distt. came into existence on Ist November, 1989. Its area is 1756 square kilometers, in which there are 623 villages, 441 Panchayats, 2 towns, 2 Sub-Divisions, 3 tehsils and 3 sub-tehsils. Before being named Yamunanagar it was known as Abdullapur. Large part of the District lies under the Shiwalik foothills. Sugarcane, wheat and rice are its main crops. It is an important Industrial town having metal, utensil and plywood industries. Large industries like Shri Gopal Paper Mills and Saraswati Sugar Mills (biggest Sugar mill in Asia) are also located here.

5 Yamunanagar was earlier known as 'Abdulahpur'. Pre-independence, it was a small village with population concentrated around its Railway Station. After partition of India, many refugees from Punjab in Pakistan choose to make Yamunanagar their new home, and in the process adding to the culture of the town. The area where land was allocated to the refugees later developed into the model town area of Yamunanagar Availability of Minerals. There is no mineral in Yamunanagar .
