Subject : Back to Office Report Background World Bank Institute and the African Region's Financial and Private Sector Operations implemented within the framework of the Africa trade Facilitation Project (ATFP). targeting Africa trade Insurance (ATI), Exporters and Importers in COMESA region have initiated and launched the trade Finance Clinics in Dar-es-Salaam.

2 It is anticipated that these trade Finance Clinics will be replicated in other COMESA countries in due course. The Dar-es-Salaam trade Finance Clinics were implemented and launched during the occasion of the Dar-es-Salaam International trade Fair ( DITF ), a landmark event on the Commercial Calendar of Tanzanian. The WBI / ATI participated in two key events during this event: a) Participation in the DITF where WBI / ATI retained a area for exhibition of trade Finance Services offered by Commercial Banks;. b) Launching and running a 3 day trade Finance Clinic which focused on SME. Exporters and Importers for the first 2 days and Women in trade for one day.

3 The Report is structured in the following manner: i) Focus on the set Terms of Reference and the linkage to the activities undertaken in the period under review;. ii) Focus on the outcomes on the participation with a linkage to outputs and impact of the participation in the DITF Exhibition and the trade Finance Clinics per-se. Objectives The purpose of the under-mentioned activities and events are in fulfillment of the set Terms of Reference ( TOR ) issued as follows: Coordinate the preparation of training materials/tools including the logistics for the trade Finance Clinics in collaboration with other partners (Commercial Banks, exporter/importers and Government Ministries).

Coordinate the organization and implementation of the Workshop on trade Finance in Africa (May 2005) including reporting of the process and Issues . Any other duties as may be requested by the Task Team Leader Summary of Events and Activities a) Planning and Coordination of Training Materials / Tools, Logistics, Collaboration with Commercial Banks / Importers / Exporters Activity Details Contacts with key stakeholders and actors were made in May and June 2005.

5 These included meeting with the following: i. Barclays Bank Kenya and Tanzania;. ii. Citibank Nairobi;. iii. Export Promotion Council of Kenya;. iv. NIC Bank;. v. African Banking Corporation;. vi. STANBIC Bank Kenya and Tanzania;. vii. EXIMBANK Tanzania;. viii. Tanzania Investment Bank Ltd.;. ix. CRDB Bank Tanzania;. x. Tanzania Women in Mining ( TAWOMA ). xi. Ministry of Industry and trade ;. xii. Board of External trade The collaboration activities included;. i. Defining of roles and responsibilities in the delivery of the trade Finance Clinics;. ii. Agreeing on the financial contributions of each party in respect to covering the cost outlay for the participation in the exhibition.

6 Iii. Agreeing on the trade Finance Clinic materials that each participant would present including the subject matter, pitch and detail;. iv. Agreeing on the identification of the target market with a view of ensuring that those who would attend the clinics would be fully benefit from the knowledge availed during the clinics;. Minutes and discussion notes have been forwarded to you already covering the dates and details of the collaborative activities. Gabriel Kivuti - Back to Office Report Dar-es-Salaam trade Finance Clinics 3. b) Coordinate the organization and implementation of the trade Finance Clinics in member countries / Coordinate the organization and implementation of the Workshop on trade Finance in Africa (May 2005) including reporting of the process and issue .

7 The coordination, organization and logistical management in the implementation of the Dar-es-Salaam trade Finance Clinics were effected over the months of May, June and July. The Consultant focused on the key coordinates as follows: i) Coordination with the Ministry of Industry and trade for the availability for the launching of the trade Finance Clinics. This was done with the close coordination and assistance of Ms. Jacqueline Maleko of the Ministry of Industry and trade and Mr. Edwin Rutageruka, the Ag. Director of Foreign trade under the Board of External trade . ii) Coordination with the Board of External trade in respect to the development and preparation of the WBI Pavilion.

8 Iii) Coordination with the developer / internal designer for the completeness of the WBI. Pavilion JR Interior Designs. iv) Coordination with Dar-es-Salaam International Conference Center for the facilities in which the trade Finance Clinics were to take place;. v) Coordination with Commercial Banks on their logo / signage availability;. vi) Coordination with Commercial Banks for the remittance of the contribution for the financial cost of internal decorator. vii) Coordination with Commercial Banks on the content of their presentations. This involved e-mail correspondence, telephone calls, meetings and travel to ensure that all the logistical aspects of the functions were in place in time for the trade Finance Clinics.

9 Please note that the process and Issues that came through during the trade Finance Clinics are reported separately in the trade Finance Clinics Presentation Summary . Report on the Exhibition at the Dar-es-Salaam International trade Fair ( DITF ). The World Bank Institute reserved some 100 sq. meters at the Sheikh Abed Karume Pavilion (formally, PTA Pavilion) for the exhibition of Commercial Banks and TAWOMA. The gist of the exhibitors would be to show case trade Finance and other loan facility opportunities to the public. 10 CRDB Bank;. Eximbank Stanbic Bank;. Barclays;. TIB. Additionally the stand also had the following: TAWOMA. WBI / ATI. Key Highlights a. The WBI / ATI Pavilion was a crowd puller and met with very enthusiastic visitors. The Banks were able to explain their specific facilities to walk-in exhibition goers. Banks had a unique opportunity to receive their clients at the show. They also had the opportunity to listen in to a few of the Buyer / Seller meetings that were undertaken after the trade Finance Clinics. b. During the DITF, adjudicators awarded the Best Foreign Pavilion Private Sector considering the peculiarity of the exhibitors in our pavilion.
