The chip seal was constructed under Project RS 0094(7), east of Punkin Center , and incorporated test sections using two Rubber -asphalt binders, a rubberized cutback, and a plain AC-10 chip seal . The project is located on State Highway 94, approximately 65 miles east of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

6 The roadway is located at an elevation of approxi-mately 5,000 feet above sea level with an annual precipitation of 14 inches. Most of the land adjacent to the project is grassland, with some dry-land wheat farming. This 28-foot highway is a farm to market road with an average daily traffic volume of 450 vehicles. Figure 1 shows the location of the project area. The majority of the project was to be sealed with a Rubber -asphalt binder manufactured by Sahuaro Petroleum. This material contains 25% scrap Rubber and 75% asphalt cement, by weight. This product uses 100% vulcanized Rubber . In addition to the Sahuaro Crumb Rubber , comparison sections were to be con-structed using another scrap Rubber product manufactured by Arizona Refineries.

7 This material contains approximately 20%'scrap Rubber and 80% asphalt cement. Arizona Refineries uses 40% vulcanized--60% devulcanized Rubber and a finer gradation than Sahuaro's product. Additional sections were constructed using plain AC-IO and Re-800 rub-berized, which was the Department's standard chip seal binder in 1978. The contract specifications for all of the binder materials appear in Appendix A. Two sets of fQur test sections were chosen approximately three miles apart. Figure 2 shows the layout of the test sections, and the preconstruction evaluation data is included with the post-construction evaluations in Tables Band C. The preconstruction survey data showed that the roadway was in good condition with minimal cracking and rutting and had a fair skid resistance. The major problem noted in the preliminary survey was surface raveling which is shown in Photographs and 2.

9 Construction began on July 5, 1978. The Sahuaro and Arizona Refineries materials were applied using large, specially made, distributor trucks with internal agitators and heaters to handle the Rubber -asphalt material. Both of the Crumb Rubber materials were added to the asphalt cement and then heated to 350-400 degrees F and held at that temperature for approximately one hour. Under these conditions, a reaction takes place between the Crumb Rubber and asphalt cement. The Sahuaro Rubber asphalt was mixed on the job site, while the Arizona Refineries material was mixed at a plant in Flagstaff, Arizona and carried to the job site in a distributor truck. One truck carried enough for the two 500-foot test sections.

10 The rubberized RC-800 and AC-10 test sections were applied using conventional distributor trucks. For this project, the Type II chips were coated with l~ AC-IO and because of scale problems were transported in haul trucks from Colorado Springs, approxi-mately 65 miles west of the project. The chip specification also appears in Appendix A. Additionally, a CSS-1H tack coat was applied to the roadway surface prior to the chip seal . Chips were applied using a Flaherty spreader and rolling was done with two Rubber tired rollers immediately behind the chip spreader. Except for delays caused by the long haul distance for aggregate few problems were encountered Table A lists the application rates for the various binders and aggregate on each of the test 3 sections and the photograph section contains pictures of the chip seal operation and equipment.
