1 porsche 968 Short ShifterInstallation InstructionsCongratulations! You have just purchased something that will make your car feelsportier and give you a more positive feel of control in your shifting. This will reduceyour shift pattern by about 20%. It may take a Short while to get used to the smallershift pattern and program your brain to how quickly you can shift. It also may takeawhile to get used to the approximately 1/2 shorter will need:3/8 drive Ratchet3/8 drive 6 Extension13mm Socket4mm Allen WrenchNeedle Nose Pliers9/16 Wrench11/16 WrenchLoctite 242 Heavy GreaseRubber Mallet or Dead Blow HammerCheck the bag. The kit should include:ShifterBall socketBushing3 WashersJam NutStep 1 - Gain access to the shifter AssemblyRemove the 2 screws in the front of the center console (1 on each side)Remove the 2 screws at the rear of the Arm Rest (inside).
2 Remove the Ash Tray to expose 4 the 2 screws at the front of the Arm RestRemove the 2 screws at the rear of the shifter Cover 2 - Remove the ShifterGently pry up the ring under the leather and at the perimeter of the leather up the leather boot to expose the rubber boot the 4 Allen screws. (Now that you have removed the screws, you can movethe console as needed to get to these).Lift the plate up and carefully pull the rubber boot out from under the wire clip on the Needle Nose Pliers, carefully remove the clip on the end of the Linkage Linkage Rod off of shifter . Be careful not to lose any parts. (There should be, inthe following order, left to right, concave washer, shim, bushing, linkage, bushing, shim,concave washer, clip)Pull up hard on the shifter knob and remove it along with the rubber boot.
3 Watch for 2rubber pieces to fall out. Hang onto note of the position of the 2 13 mm bolts in the slots on the platePeel back the foam and remove the 2 13mm bolts and shifter up and the bushing from the ball at the bottom of the shifter by prying it off. (A viseand a pair of screwdrivers makes this pretty easy)Step 3 Prepare new ShifterInstall Ball socket and Jam nut into shifter as shown. Use Loctite 242 on the NOT SKIP THIS : At this time you can install one or all of the washers as desired between the ballsocket and shifter as shown. Adding these will further shorten the shift pattern. If youdo not wish to shorten the pattern that far, do not use the washers. Be sure that there isno interference with the shifter tunnel after installation.
4 If there is, reduce the number ofwashers until there isn 4 Install BushingTo install the bushing, apply a generous amount of heavy grease into the bushing andonto the ball. Do NOT use a thin grease (like white lithium).Set Bushing on a piece of shifter ball into bushing through hole in mounting plate. (NOT SHOWN)Using a rubber mallet or dead blow hammer, tap firmly but evenly onto shifter to pushball into bushing. DO NOT USE A METAL HAMMER OR HIT THIS TOO HARD! ITWILL BREAK THE 5 Install New ShifterInstallation is reverse of Steps 1 and 2. You may not need all of the shims and washerson the Linkage. If not, delete the smaller diameter ones, one at a time so that theLinkage is snug but moves freely on the shifter clip slides into the groove AND over the end of the to install the bolts in the plate in the same relative position as when youremoved may take some smacking on the top of the shift knob to get it to seat down all the this with your hand.
5 Do not hit the shift knob with a hammer of any sort. It will resistgoing down, due to the rubber pieces, but be to see that nothing is binding up. Go for a test drive and 6 Relax and EnjoyGrab a beer firmly with left handWith right hand using bottle opener on cap, lift firmly and evenly to (the beer, not the cap).You re done!!!
