5 This makes them heavier and moredifficult to transport. Coupled with this is the factthat, traditionally, Pharmaceutical liquids arepacked in glass bottles. These are obviously proneto breakage which can be hazardous and cause theloss of the preparation.*Technical accuracy is needed to measure the doseon administration. Although the dose can betitrated without the need to produce additionalpreparations (see point 2 from the advantagesabove), patient accuracy in measuring a dose isrequired. It is accepted that patients abilities tomeasure an accurate dose can vary considerablyand this needs to be taken into consideration whenpreparing a liquid preparation. This is especiallyimportant when the volume of liquid to beadministered is very small, where small changes inthe volume administered may result in largeincreases or decreases in dose.*Some drugs are poorly soluble. The solubility of adrug needs to be taken into consideration whenpreparing a solution to ensure that the finalvolume produced is not excessive.

It is therefore common to find solutions classifiedaccording to their intended use ( oral internal, topi-cal, ophthalmic, nasal or parenteral), by the nature oftheir formulation ( simple or complex), or to becategorised by a traditional name that relates to thesolvent system used and/or their intended function ( , tinctures, aromatic waters, syrups and elixirs).

7 Although the precise characteristics of differenttypes of solution may vary, the essential principlesgoverning their preparation remain similar. The twokey characteristics that need to be considered whencompounding solutions are solubility and following points relating to the solubility of thedrug element(s) of the formulation need to be takeninto consideration:*Will the drug(s) dissolve in the solvent or acomponent of the solvent system?*What quantity of drug will dissolve?*How long will dissolution take?*Will the drug(s) remain in solution and for howlong?*What is the pH of solvent required fordissolution?Answers to many of the above questions willrequire the compounder to perform a solubility calcu-lation, as described in Chapter preparing a solution, the solid(s) will need togo through a dissolution phase. During Compounding ,it is worth remembering that dissolution rates gener-ally increase with:*smaller particle sizes*effective stirring*lower viscosities*increased addition to the solubility of the drug element(s) ofthe formulation, other considerations regarding thephysical stability of the preparation will need to betaken into consideration ( temperature variation,photosensitivity, etc.)

8 , as will the chemical stabilityand time period, and the microbiological stabilityand need for a methodThe following general method should be used in thepreparation of a solution:1 Write out the formula either from theprescription (unofficial) or from an official text(official).2 Calculate the quantities required for eachingredient in the formula to produce therequired final volume. 9 In almost all cases, dissolution willtake place in a glass (or occasionally plastic)beaker, not a conical measure. If stirringdevices are used to assist dissolution ( rod,magnetic stirrers), remember to remove thembefore adjusting to final volume.*It is best to stir continuously when combiningingredients into a solution (either liquid or solidingredients). By stirring continually duringincorporation, high concentration planes withinthe fluid body, which might increase thelikelihood of incompatibilities, will be considerations during the preparation of asolution:*To aid dissolution, high-viscosity liquidcomponents should be added to those of lowerviscosity.
