The back EMF constant of the motor is usually specified by the motor manufacturer in volts/RPM or mV/RPM. In order to arrive at a meaningful value for the back EMF, it is necessary to specify the motor velocity in units compatible with the specified back EMF constant.

3. Back EMF Effect of DC Motor in sim ulation Now, let’s try to suppress the large spikes produced by back EMF with a diode. Add a diode by clicking on left to the ‘component’ button on the menu bar. Set the diode values by right clicking the diode. Then, click Pick New Diodeand pick the first option as shown in figure 18.

Figure 23–18 The back emf of an inductor! The effect of an increasing current in a coil is an induced emf that opposes the increase. This is indicated schematically by replacing the coil with the opposing, or “back,” emf.

Back-EMF (the voltage induced into the stator winding due to rotor movement) shape is trapezoidal. This allows the three phase voltage system (see Figure 3-2), with a rectangular shape, to be used to create a rotational field with low torque ripples. Stator Stator winding (in …

This emf, known as the back emf, acts against the applied voltage that's causing the motor to spin in the first place, and reduces the current flowing through the coils. At operating speed, enough current flows to overcome any losses due to friction and to provide the necessary energy required for the motor to do work. ...

A minimum back-EMF is needed to properly execute commutation. This means that when the rotor is stationary, the motor is not able to start since no back-EMF is produced. Similarly, the induced back-EMF at low speeds might not satisfy the minimum speed required, resulting in a poor commutation.
