Benzene will react with hot concentrated nitric acid to produce nitrobenzene. However, this reaction proceeds slowly, which is inconvenient (dangerous) since hot, conc. nitric acid is a powerful oxidizer, and organic compounds are easily oxidizable. (i.e. potential for BOOM!) A safer reaction involves a mixture of nitric and sulfuric acid.

Products: sodium sulfate and nitric acid [....although nitric acid typically exists as an aqueous solution.] (d) NiCO3(s) + 2 HNO3(aq) Ni(NO3)2(aq) + CO2(g) + H2O(l) 1. Note the need for at least 1 Ni atom on both sides. This inventory will mandate 2 NO3 groups on the right—and also on the left. Since these come from HNO3

concentrated nitric acid. Add this acidic mixture dropwise to the large reaction tube. Stir after each drop. After the addition is complete, remove the tube from the ice water bath and let it warm to room temperature. While warming, use a glass stirring rod to gently mix your sample, which should be a yellow, homogeneous mixture.
