March 2017 there were 53,420 children in foster care and during that year there were about 78,000 placements (as some children changed foster home). Most of the children in care in England, and most of those fostered, are there because they have suffered abuse or neglect (about 65%). A further 15% are in care as a result of family dysfunction.
