3 Sep 1930 in Coffeyville, Montgomery, KA, USA. Notes for JOHN BANOWETZ: !Died from Pulmonary Tuberculosis. Buried at: Calvary Cemetery (adjoining Fairview Cemetery) in Section E, Coffeyville, Montgomery, Kansas, USA. John was a Farmer. His grandfather, John Banowetz, lived in Austria-Hungary and came to America in 1866. He traveled to Dubuque, Iowa, where many of his countrymen had settled. Later he sent for his family which consisted of his father, Michael Banowetz, his mother, Gertrude (Stanitsch) Banowetz, and his brother, Mathias, who was fourteen years younger. They migrated to this country in 1870 and located in a settlement known as Sugar Creek District, Browns, Clinton County, Iowa. Here they found people who had immigrated from Austria-Hungary and who were also Catholic. My grandmother, Margaretha Nick, also lived in Austria-Hungary. At the suggestion of her brother, Joe Nick, who had come to America previously, she came to join him in Dubuque, Iowa in 1872.
4 There she met my grandfather and with the blessings of both her brother and his parents they were married in the Sugar Creek Catholic Church on April 7, 1873. They moved on a 40 acre farm in the Sugar Creek District, Browns, Iowa, and started housekeeping. Their first five children were born on this farm. They then made several moves before my grandfather bought a 240 acre farm near Angola, Kansas, which was to become known as the "Home Place". (Written by Mary Constance from notes made while talking with Daddy, Frank E. Banowetz, as well as written material found elsewhere.). (Research):See attached sources. Excerpt from the Browns, Sugar Creek and Riggs History, The Banowetz Families on pages 6 and 7: John Banowetz met Margaretha Nik, who had joined her brother, Joseph Nik in Dubuque in 1872. They were married in April of 1873 at St. Josephs in Sugar Creek. They settled on a small farm of 40 acres west of the church. According to the 1894 plat map, M Banowetz had purchased this farm of 40 acres, adding to the original 32, which made his farm include 72 acres.
