3 Frequently Asked Questions What is a 1098-T ? The 1098-T form provides tax information intended to assist qualified students in determining eligibility for the Hope tax credit - American Opportunity tax credit and the Lifetime Learning credit. The forms are generated and provided to eligible students by January 31st of each calendar year. What has changed with my 1098T in calendar (tax) year 2018?
4 In 2017 and prior, Brandman University reported qualified CHARGES in Box 2. Effective January 1, 2018 the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is requiring universities to begin reporting what students paid to an educational institution in Box 1. Payments made in calendar year 2018 toward 2017 calendar year sessions will not appear on the form 1098-T in 2018 for the following reason: On form 1098-T for 2017, Brandman University was reporting qualified charges in Box 2. For some students, Spring 2018 charges were incurred in December 2017 and reported in Box 2 on the 2017 form 1098-T . On the 2018 form 1098-T , Brandman University will be reporting qualified payments in Box 1. Your payment made prior to 1/1/18 cannot be reported in 2018, since 1098T form is limited to the reporting/calendar year.
5 Payment made in 2018 towards session in 2017 cannot be reported as well, in order to avoid duplicate reporting, since corresponding charges would have already been reported on the 2017 form . While the transition can be a bit confusing, nothing has been lost or misreported during the transition from reporting in Box 2 in 2017, to reporting payments in Box 1 in 2018. IRS is aware of the nationwide change in the reporting methodology and the resulting idiosyncrasies. Does every student receive 1098T form ? Brandman University must file a form 1098-T for each student enrolled for the given calendar year and for whom a reportable transaction is made. However, the IRS does not require Brandman University to provide a form 1098-T for: Courses for which no academic credit is offered, even if the student is otherwise enrolled in a degree program; Nonresident alien students; Students whose qualified Tuition and related expenses are entirely waived or paid entirely with financial aid scholarships and/or grants, employer payments (such as Guild Education Walmart, Discover and other partners), department of Veteran Affairs, Department of Defense Tuition assistance and other similar arrangements.
6 Please note that due to 2018 being a reporting methodology transition year ( transition from reporting charges billed to payments made), to assist students with better understanding of the forms, they will be generated, although IRS allows this exclusion; Students whose expenses are covered by a formal 3rd party billing arrangement How do I sign up for electronic delivery of 1098T?
