4 IS/ISO 14001 was originally published in 1997 under dual number standard by adopting first edition of ISO 14001. With the publication of second edition of ISO 14001 in 2004, the revision of IS/ISO 14001 was taken up for updating the standard in line with ISO 14001:2004. Similarly, second revision of IS/ISO 14001 is being taken up for updation the standard in line with latest edition of ISO 14001. The text of ISO standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following: a) Wherever the words 'International Standard' appear referring to this standard, they should be read as 'Indian Standard' b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker in the International Standard, while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.

5 As the decimal marker. In this adopted standard, reference appears to certain International Standards for which Indian Standards also exist. There is no corresponding Indian Standards which are to be substituted in their places. 10 The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular the different approval criteria needed for the different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see ).
