9 When using a pressure regulator, both the pump and downstream components will always be at the set system pressure. A pressure regulating unloader performs the same function as a regulator but also contains a check valve on the discharge side. When a shut-off device downstream is closed, the check valve seats against the body of the unloader, trapping the high-pressure from the check valve to shut-off device, relieving pressure between the unloader valve and pump head. This not only reduces wear on pump and drive components, but also protects against rapid heat rise.
