Grade Data Sheet2101 Revised November 2011 Page 1 of is a duplex (ferritic/austenitic)stainless steel Grade with a useful combinationof corrosion resistance and high it has almost no molybdenum and alow nickel content the Grade is an economicalalternative to 304 or 316 in some 2101 nickel is largely replaced bymanganeseandmolybdenum scorrosionresistance role largely taken over by strength is about double that of thestandard austenitic grades 304 and was developed by Outokumpu as a lean duplex Grade .

It has since been allocateddesignations UNS S32101 and in theAmerican and European standards systems. Italso has ASME pressure vessel endorsement, initially under Code Case ResistanceGeneral corrosion resistance between Grades304 and 316 in most environments. Goodresistance to localised corrosion includingintergranular, pitting and crevice corrosion ; thePitting Resistance Equivalent (PRE) of 2101 is26 slightly higher than that of 316, but actualpitting and crevice corrosion behaviour isgenerally a between that of 304 and 2101 is also resistant to chloride stresscorrosion cracking (SCC)

At temperatures up toover100 which cause premature failure ofaustenitic Atlas Technical Assistance for specificenvironmental ResistanceAlthough 2101 has good high temperatureoxidation resistance this Grade , like otherduplexstainlesssteels, suffersfromem brittlement if held at temperatures above300 C. If embrittled this can only be rectifiedby a full solution annealing treatment. Duplexstainless steels are almost never used above300 Temperature Performance2101 is not generally recommended for usebelow -50 C because of its ductile-to-brittle-transition, again common to all duplexstainless TreatmentSolution treatment (annealing)Heat to 1020-1080 C and cool rapidly.

Thisgrade cannot be hardened by thermaltreatment, but does work by all standard electric of 2209 rods or electrodes ensures thatdeposited metal has the correctly balancedduplex structure. Heat input should be kept low(although this is less restrictive than for otherduplex grades) and no pre- or post-heat shouldbe used. Unlike other duplex grades welding of2101 without filler metal may be lower co-efficient of thermal expansion ofall duplex stainless steels compared withaustenitic grades reduces distortion andassociated high strength that makes 2101 useful inmanyapplicationsalsoreducesitsmachinab ility, but overall it machines slightlybetter than high strength of 2101 also makes bendingand forming more difficult.

These operationswill require larger capacity equipment thanwould be required for austenitic stainlesssteels. The ductility of 2101 is less than that ofan austenitic Grade (but is not low whencompared to most other structural materials),so severe forming operations, such as coldheading, are not generally possible. If severecold working is required it is recommendedthat intermediate annealing be carried ApplicationsChemical processing, transport and storage. Allstructural and pressure applications requiringhigh strength and good corrosion resistance ateconomical Data Sheet2101 Revised November 2011 Page 2 of PropertiesThese properties are specified for Grade 2101 (S32101) flat rolled product (plate over 5mmthick) in ASTM A240/A240M.

M) Specification comparisons are approximate only. The list is intended as a comparison of functionally similarmaterialsnotas a schedule of contractual equivalents. If exact equivalents are needed originalspecifications must be Alternative GradesGradeWhy it might be chosen instead of 2304304 LGenerally slightly lower pitting and crevice corrosion resistance than 2101 and lower strength, but more easily cold formed and more readily available. 304 is slightly higher pitting and crevice corrosion resistance than 2101, more easily coldformed and more readily available, but lower strength.

316 is resistance to corrosion is required, eg resistance to higher temperature chloridesolutions. Grade 2205 is often more readily available than /444 Slightly higher pitting and crevice corrosion resistance than 2101, more easily cold formedand lower cost. F18MS / 444 is only available in thin gauge sheet and higher resistance to corrosion is required, eg resistance to higher temperaturechloride solutions. Grade 2304 is generally less readily available than of LiabilityThe information contained in this datasheet is not an exhaustive statement of all relevant information.
