2 A student with a learner s license is covered by the parent/guardian who has valid automobile insurance. A copy of the parent/guardian s insurance card must be provided to the Career-Technical, Adult and Community Education Department when the registration packet is submitted. If the parent/guardian does not have automobile insurance, a named non-owner policy must be obtained for the student. A student who has already obtained a driver s license must be named on his or her parent/guardian s policy or must have his or her own insurance. WHEN ARE THE CLASSES OFFERED? Classes are offered during the daylight hours weekdays after school, on Saturdays, and during selected school breaks, including the summer. WHERE ARE THE CLASSES OFFERED? Classes originate from Lake County s eight public high schools and from the Career-Technical, Adult and Community Education facility in Howey-in-the-Hills, located at 525 N.

3 Georgia Avenue. HOW MUCH DO THE CLASSES COST? The Lake County Board of County Commissioners is funding scholarships that cover the cost of the class for students meeting the eligibility requirements listed above. HOW/WHEN WILL MY STUDENT BE SCHEDULED FOR A CLASS? Parents are contacted by the Career-Technical, Adult and Community Education Department in the order in which their complete registration packets are received. Usually more than one class is available. WHAT IF MY STUDENT CANNOT ATTEND THE CLASSES OFFERED IN A SESSION? If a student is unable to commit to attending any of the classes offered in a session, his or her name will be placed at the end of the registration list. WILL MY STUDENT S NAME REMAIN ON THE REGISTRATION LIST INDEFINITELY? If a student does not complete a DRIVING class within six months of the date the registration packet was received or by September 30th, whichever comes first, the student s name will be removed from the list.

4 A new registration packet needs to be submitted for a student to be placed back on the registration list. WHAT IF MY STUDENT CANNOT ATTEND ALL OF THE LESSONS IN THE CLASS? A student must attend all scheduled lessons; substitution dates are not available. HOW MANY STUDENTS WILL BE IN MY STUDENT S CLASS? Each class is scheduled with three high school students and one instructor. Students remain in the vehicle and rotate their DRIVING and observation times during the class. No fewer than two students will be in the vehicle at any given time. WHAT TYPE OF VEHICLE WILL MY STUDENT DRIVE? Specially equipped, well marked behind -the- wheel DRIVING vehicles are provided for all classes. WHO WILL TEACH MY STUDENT? All behind -the- wheel DRIVING instructors are teachers in the Lake County School District who have received special training to teach driver s education and have been certified by the State of Florida s Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

5 WHAT WILL MY STUDENT S CLASS ENTAIL? All behind -the- wheel DRIVING INSTRUCTION is done in the vehicle; no classroom time is included. Students receive 10 hours of DRIVING time with INSTRUCTION and up to 20 hours of in-vehicle observation. WILL MY STUDENT BE READY TO TAKE THE DRIVING TEST WHEN THE CLASS IS COMPLETE? The class rubric contains all of the skills included on the DRIVING test, and a student will practice as many of these skills as time and the student s confidence and DRIVING proficiency will allow. However, there is no guarantee that he or she will be ready to secure a driver s license. WILL MY STUDENT GET AN INSURANCE DISCOUNT AS A RESULT OF TAKING THE CLASS? Because company policies vary, parents/guardians need to contact their insurance company directly to determine whether any discounts will apply. A student will receive a certificate that documents his or her DRIVING and observation hours upon completion of the course.

6 This is the only documentation that will be provided regarding the student s DRIVING class. WILL MY STUDENT RECEIVE A CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION? Normally, a student will receive a certificate that documents his or her DRIVING and observation hours two weeks after the DRIVING class is complete. WHERE WILL MY STUDENT DRIVE? behind -the- wheel INSTRUCTION takes place on streets and highways in Lake County only. Students do not drive on the turnpike or outside of Lake County . HOW DO I REGISTER MY STUDENT? Download the behind -the- wheel DRIVING registration packet. Complete the registration packet: o The student must sign the Student Scholarship Application o A parent or guardian and two adult witnesses must sign the Medical Release Form and the Insurance Information Form. Return the Student Scholarship Application Form, Medical Release Form and Insurance Information Form, along with a copy of the student s learner s license and a copy of your automobile insurance card to: Choice, Charter & Community Education 525 N.

WILL THE GRANT RUN OUT OF MONEY BEFORE MY STUDENT IS SCHEDULED FOR A CLASS? The Lake County Board of County Commissioners has provided scholarships to be awarded. These scholarships will be awarded on a first-come, first served basis.
